So many of us are dealing with let downs and disappointments that don't even begin to scratch the surface of who we are and the pain we carry. And as much as I love a good self-help book or inspirational story to get out of a runt, there is some pain out there in the world that I can't even begin to comprehend, let alone help solve or make easier. The one thing that I am constantly learning while serving with the next generation of leaders (Young Adults & Students) is that I will not relate to everyone's story, and that's okay, because I don't have to. My job there (and here at Love & Society) is to ultimately point people to the one who CAN relate, the one with answers, the one who will stick closer than anyone else ever could. My purpose is to be so transparent that you don't see me, that you see God through me, so while studying and searching for scriptures that I can give to others for encouragement, I came across Psalm 34:18

18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. (ESV)

If the Bible teaches us nothing else, it teaches that God has immense love for His people, yet God knew that at some point we would also go through some pain in this life and we would start to question His love so I believe this verse was place here for a reason, for the days where we need to reminded.

I wish I could tell you that living a life solely devoted to God would be easy. That once we give our lives to Christ we no longer have to deal with pain, disappointments or let downs. That we no longer have struggles. Yet as we all know, that's not the case. Though we serve a perfect God, we as Christians are broken, imperfect people who get to love, care and interact with other imperfect people, and at some point disappointments and let downs are bound to happen. Someone isn't going to measure up. Someone is going to say something offensive. Someone is going to mess up, and unfortunately that's going to cause some pain. In some cases, a lot of pain. Yet God is near.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the Message Bible, but I love the way this verse is worded here:

18 If your heart is broken, you’ll find God right there; if you’re kicked in the gut, he’ll help you catch your breath. (MSG)

If your heart is broken, you'll find God... right there.

Not around the corner. Not AFTER you do something for Him. But right there

In all your brokenness and pain, God is with you. I believe that God is with us at all times, but I believe He pays special attention to the ones whose spirits are crushed, whose hearts are broken. I believe, matter fact I know, that God pulls us in just a little closer when we're at our most vulnerable to remind us that He cares, He's with us and He's near. Right where we are.

So whoever needs this encouragement today:

I love you, but more importantly God loves you, and if you're broken, He's especially close.
